Intercessors' help sheet

Taking part in the service

The intercessor should go to the back immediately at the end of that so they are ready.

The person leading the service will say

“Let us pray for the church and for the world, giving thanks for God’s goodness.”

This is your cue to begin.

This year we would like to introduce a period of silence here, so here are the words

“In a few moments of silence we remember God’s presence with us now and bring to him our own prayers”

Allow the moment to become ‘a space’ for the congregation – It may be a little difficult to begin with but after a few months we will be better at it!

Prayer is offered with thanksgiving and intercession for the universal Church and the local church, the world and our nation, the local community and the community of heaven, those in need, and our ministries. Check p413, 416, 462 & 482 of NZPB and the booklets we use at St Andrew’s. Use these as guidelines if you write your own. There are also other books available to refer to e.g. David Adam’s – ask Liz or other intercessors.

During the prayers the following may be used at the end of each section.

You: Lord, hear our prayer

Response: And let our cry come unto thee

If you want to use different ones then you will need to tell the congregation both the beginning and their response.

When the last section is complete say the following

We gather our prayers together

Those things, good Lord, that your servants have prayed for, give us grace to work for; and in the purpose of your love answer our prayers and fulfil our hopes for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Then say - We conclude by singing the Doxology – this gives the organist the cue to start playing [To the tune (‘All people that on earth do dwell’)]

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him, all creatures here below

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

Thank you and bless you, you can now return to your seat
