Love's Obligations

The American civil rights activist Martin Luther King was not only a great Christian leader, he was also something of a prophet.![]()
His famous “I have a dream” speech reflects something of what it means to speak out prophetically for God. Here is part of that speech.
“ I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the meaning of this creed. We hold those truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.”
The religious people of Jesus’ day hid behind their own set of rules and regulations to avoid love’s obligations. Today the church - and its leaders - can use rules and traditions to rationalize away our obligation to not only care for others but be a prophetic voice into our communities.
Where do we stand on moral and ethical issues?
What parts of us are still biased on class and racial issues?
